As gas prices slowly drop across the nation, Rockford-area motorists were treated to a rare sight Monday: Gas for less than $3 a gallon.
According to IllinoisGasPrices.com and Register Star staff reports, several area stations were charging $2.97 to $2.99 a gallon for regular unleaded.
The national average for gas was $2.98 a gallon early Monday, according to AAA’s fuelgaugereport.com, down from $3.02 a month ago.
Illinois had dropped more, going from $3.11 a gallon a month ago to $3.04 Monday.
The Rockford metro area on average was at $3.03 a gallon early Monday, the third-highest in the state. Its average has dropped three cents in the past month.
