One of the secrets of McDonald’s USA’s success is that its work force looks like its customer base.
“Collectively, our employees represent a myriad of cultures, experiences and perspectives,” said Karen Wells, vice president of strategy and menu, who speaks at the Rockford Chamber of Commerce’s annual minority enterprise luncheon Thursday.
“Recognizing and embracing our differences are integral components of our culture and our heritage, and set us apart from our competitors. They enable us to appreciate differing points of view and stay sensitive to what makes all of us unique and special.”
Wells will talk about McDonald’s commitment to diversity, as well as the importance for professionals and businesspeople to set clear personal and professional goals.
The Naperville resident started at McDonald’s in 1992 as a marketing supervisor. Now she is responsible for developing and communicating long-term plans and overseeing a 45-person team that shapes the McDonald’s menu.
McDonald’s is a global brand, but its U.S. store operations are mostly run by independent small-business owners. Those entrepreneurs often use that experience to own larger businesses later.
People looking to build a company or their career need to put their customers first, never rest on their laurels and give back to their community, she said. “Have a passion and desire to do well, and have fun doing it.”
At Thursday’s luncheon, the chamber will announce the winners of two annual awards:
The Charles Box Award is presented to a nonminority-owned chamber-member company that embraces diversity in the workplace.
The Isaac Wilson Award is for a minority-owned, chamber-member company that has demonstrated growth, community involvement and a commitment to mentoring.
