After two years of construction, the revamped interchange of Interstates 90 and 39 opened today.
Traffic can use the new ramp from westbound I-90 (the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) to southbound I-39. That’s also the route to get to the U.S. 20 bypass.
Vehicles won’t have to use the detour involving the Irene Road exit in Boone County, though that exit will remain open.
The new interchange has flyover ramps connecting the interstates that can handle more and faster traffic. Speed limits are 30 to 55 mph, depending on the ramp. The busiest ramps, linking I-39 with the I-90 leg that heads to and from Wisconsin, were widened to two lanes.
The tollway also removed the old tollbooth structures at the interchange.
